We had a tough time last night with our two year old. She woke up at least five times crying and delusional with fever and coughing.
I must admit that fevers used to intimidate me. I used to be so afraid for my children when they had a high fever. I succumbed to the 101° fever fright night crowd.
That was before I researched fevers and the myth behind this fright. We all know that fevers occur as a result of the body fighting off infection. Bacteria or what have you enters the body and attacks. In its infinite wisdom, the human body elevates its temperature in an attempt to kill those nasty intruders.
It really is an excellent technique.
Unfortunately most parents do not allow the body the chance it needs to fight the infection. They reach for the good old fashioned fever reducer at the slightest sign of elevation.
There is no reason for this. There is no danger if a fever is under 104°. Keep yourself or your children well hydrated and cooled. Drinking cool water (no ice) is hydrating and is a natural fever reducer. At 104° the chance for febrile seizures rises IF the fever SPIKES quickly and sharply. (I.e. it goes from 101° to 105° in under half an hour)
However, if the fever is rising steadily and as expected, there is no reason for ER visits or extra medicine.
Now, onto what I use as fever reducers. I love using peppermint and sandalwood essential oils. During a fever like my daughter had last night, I apply peppermint essential oil every 15 minutes until it breaks. I apply it directly to the bottom of her feet.
By 2am her fever was down   and she fell asleep deeply and woke up feeling cool to the touch. She is still feeling under the weather but thankfully, I didn't waste time, I just trusted my instincts (and natural medicine!).
